Optical deference in and out of water.

The two photographs are of the same Brown, notice the 5 dots under the eye.

In the  "Aquarium" shot as I'm calling it notice how much
thinner this Brown looks from the one below.

In this out water shot, notice how much wider this Brown looks.
Yes, the net gives a sense of  scale, but the water refraction
bends the light and reduces the size.

These photographs were shot with a Pentax W90.

Diving into Tenkara

I purchased my first Tenkara rod and line from TenkaraUSA.com.  The Jersey Angler turn me on to this traditional Japanese fly fishing method.  It's a great way of delivering your flies to the fish and loads of fun.

Fishing "Tenkara" only requires only a rod and line, much like in Izaak Walton's time. In The Compleat Angler.

 Piscator said to Venator:

"And I will then give you direction for the making and using of your flies: and
in the meantime, there is your rod and line; and my advice is, that you
fish as you see me do, and let's try which can catch the first fish".

You'll can see from the engraving below no reel.

       "Izaak Walton and his scholar"

by American illustrator Louis John Rhead (1857-1926).

Sawyer's Pheasant Tail Nymph - Strikes again

Frank Sawyer's Pheasant Tail Nymph is simply brilliant!

It imitates so many mayfly of nymphs it a great searching pattern, but when a hatch is on and the fish aren't rising tie one on that matches the size of the natural.  You'll be glad you did.

This Big Boy took a size 14 Sawyer's Pheasant Tail Nymph

One Eye Rainbow

New Jersey is the most densely state in the nation. With that comes greater fishing pressure, so it's not on common for fish to lose an eye from an encounter with a fly.

On the positive side a fish can an will survive even with one eye.

Remember mash down those barbs.

This healthy Rainbow looks fine at first glance, but...

It's lost one eye in a battle some time ago, but still found my Tan UV Caddis.
